About Us

In 1962 with urban renewal projects threatening many historically significant buildings in downtown New Bedford, a group of concerned citizens took it upon themselves to form the Waterfront Historic Area LeaguE (W.H.A.L.E.). The tireless dedication and boundless vision of the founding members made it possible to save local landmarks from a bygone era for future generations. Between 1962 and 2009 W.H.A.L.E. has facilitated the restoration and preservation of more than 40 buildings. One of W.H.A.L.E.’s largest undertakings was the establishment of a 34 acre portion of downtown New Bedford as a national historical park in 1996.
